In a shocking turn of events, a shooter opened fire at the Atlanta headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Aug. 8, affecting six buildings and breaking about 150 windows. Tragically, the incident claimed the life of DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose.

The shooter, believed to have been motivated by concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine, fired almost 500 shots. Following the attack, the CDC is asking its employees to return to the Atlanta headquarters by Monday, Sep. 15.

This incident has led to a series of leadership changes at the CDC. Former Director Dr. Susan Monarez was ousted from her position this week, and Jim O'Neill has taken over as the interim director since September 15, 2025. Previously, three high-ranking doctors, Deb Houry, Demetre Daskalakis, and Dan Jernigan, had already resigned from the CDC.

In an effort to address growing frustrations among CDC employees, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sent an email stating that reform does not diminish their work but strengthens it. Kennedy, who aims to restore trust and rebuild the CDC into a guardian of America's health and security, expressed the goal of the CDC to once again be the world's leader in communicable disease prevention.

Kennedy's vision is to restore the CDC's reputation and make it a beacon of health and security for America. He believes that this reform will not only strengthen the CDC's work but also help it regain its position as the world's leader in communicable disease prevention.

This is a developing story, with more information expected to be released. The CDC, under its new leadership, is working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of its employees and the public. As the investigation continues, the CDC remains committed to its mission of protecting America's health and security.
